Monthly Bach pieces in 2026
Monthly Bach pieces in 2026!
From Kantor Aaron
Previously, Pastor Mark and I discussed the idea of presenting organ works from organ repertoire for the prelude on a monthly basis as a thanksgiving and acknowledgement of God’s creation of music. However, executing the works with the condition of our organ at the time was unworkable. As you may be aware, our pipe organ at St. Paul’s has been declining with many problems, including the emergence of irreparable, non-speaking pipes and a console with a failed memory system. To address the issues, a committee was formed in 2018 to explore the repair or replacement of the 1968-built organ. Repairs were made to the most problematic parts of the organ, but the organ remains destined to be replaced as determined by multiple, reputable organ builders the committee has engaged. However, we can reconsider an offering of longer organ works on the last Sunday of each month in 2026
Last year marked the 340th anniversary of the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach. There were celebrations of Bach’s works throughout the year, but I did not specifically note the anniversary to the congregation, simply interspersing Bach’s works without fanfare. We owe a great debt to God’s gift of music through Bach, including his marvelous collection of organ compositions. While the organ console still has a failed memory system along with other problems, many of Bach’s organ pieces are accessible. Maybe I’m late to the party, but I propose to play Bach’s organ works throughout the year. Let’s enjoy the first movement of the 1st Trio Sonata in E Flat (Allegro), BWV 525 on Sunday, January 25th and the 3rd movement on Sunday, Feb 22. We can celebrate Bach’s 341st birthday anniversary together.
